GLW Feeds

Leicestershire-based farm industry supplier GLW Feeds is running the first of a new breed of trucks, in the shape of a pair of Mercedes-Benz Actros tractor units.

GLW runs 30 articulated and rigid vehicles from its headquarters in Shepshed, near Loughborough. All had been Swedish-built but, says Transport Manager Andy Andrews, the total quality package offered by East Midlands Dealer Mertrux prompted its latest investment.

Both Actros 2551 models with aerodynamic StreamSpace cabs, the new arrivals are powered by 375 kW (510 hp) straight-six engines which drive through smooth and fuel-efficient Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated transmissions. They are the subject of contract hire packages arranged by Mertrux sister company Pentagon Vehicle Rentals, and are being inspected and serviced under five-year Mercedes-Benz Repair and Maintenance contracts.

“We knew the Actros was a good solid truck, because we’d tried a couple of rented tractors which performed very reliably,” Mr Andrews recalled. “They were well-built with comfortable cabs, and seemed very economical.”

“We were looking for much more than just good vehicles, though, as the back-up had to be of equal quality too. We’ve been highly impressed by our dealings so far with Mertrux – it’s a family-run business with a real customer service ethos, exactly like our own.”

He continued: “Sales executive Simon McGuinness has been an absolute gem throughout the acquisition process, and has done everything we asked for done straight away. The Dealer’s Leicester service team are also very friendly and professional – they visited our premises and gave us all the assurances we could ask for that our trucks will be supported with top-quality aftercare.

“We’ve already had a visit from the Dealer’s Driver Trainer Dave Stevens, who gave our drivers a thorough introduction to the truck, and showed them how best to use the on board technology to maximise fuel efficiency.

“I’ve also arranged for a representative from Mercedes-Benz FleetBoard to instruct our traffic office team and our drivers in the use of the telematics systems fitted to the Actros as standard.”

Established as long ago as 1873, GLW delivers a wide range of feeds from its state-of-the-art mill in Shepshed, to farms across the country. Most feed is delivered in bulk, in pneumatic blower trailers powered by donkey engines, although the company also supplies bagged feeds to livestock farmers, gamekeepers and farm stores throughout the UK.
