Wrings Transport
The largest privately-owned haulier in the busy Avonmouth area has hailed as “priceless” the training received by the drivers of its four new Mercedes-Benz Actros tractor units.
Wrings Transport’s first Euro VI trucks are all Actros 2545 models with flat-floored BigSpace cabs – two are on long distance curtainside work, the other two on container duties. They were supplied by local Dealer City West Commercials, whose driver-trainer Justyn Marshman has delivered a first round of instruction, with more planned.
Justyn went in three months after the Actros entered service. A week later, following his training, fuel returns from the two long distance units had shot up from 9.75 mpg and 9.49 mpg, to 10.22 mpg and 10.17 mpg respectively.
“We saw an incredible improvement in fuel-efficiency on those two vehicles as a direct result of Justyn’s input,” declared Managing Director Stuart Wring. “The training we’ve received so far has been priceless.”
A general haulier and transport contractor, Wrings Transport runs a dual-marque fleet of 32 tractor units, which also includes 11 Euro V Actros. Mr Wring continued: “Obviously the fuel returns vary from day to day, depending on the nature of the work, the route and so on.
“But it’s fair to say that on average, our first Euro VI Actros are performing roughly one mile per gallon better than the Euro V models, and more often than not are also comfortably ahead of our Swedish-built Euro V units.”
As well as planning for a second visit by Justyn Marshman, Wrings Transport has promoted one of its own experienced drivers, Shaun Mulhall, to the position of in-house driver-trainer. He, too, will receive instruction from Mercedes-Benz on how to get the very best from the Euro VI Actros.
City West Commercials services and inspects Wrings Transport’s Actros under five-year Mercedes-Benz Repair and Maintenance Contracts. The Dealer will also be supplying the operator with two new 7.5-tonne Atego curtainsiders, the first Mercedes-Benz rigids it has ordered since 1998.
“City West employs some good people and provides a first-class service,” added Mr Wring. “I have no doubt that as an all-round package, so based not only on fuel-efficiency but also on other factors such as driver acceptability and back-up, Mercedes-Benz trucks are the best on the market right now.”
Justyn Marshman became City West Commercials’ first driver-trainer in January. “I’d always aspired to some kind of coaching role and am really enjoying the job,” he said. “It’s important to emphasise that I’m not teaching people to drive – they can already do that. It’s all about promoting a defensive style at the wheel, one that makes the best possible use of momentum and helps drivers to extract the maximum benefit from the different transmission modes and other ground-breaking technology on the latest Mercedes-Benz trucks.”
Wrings can trace its roots back to 1927, when Sidney Joseph Wring began using a horse and cart to deliver coal to hospitals and schools throughout the Bristol area. In its current form, however, the company was founded in 1995, when Sidney’s youngest son Royston, and his two sons Stuart and Martin, began trading with a single 3.5-tonne dropsider.
