New vehicles for Powerday

One of London’s largest waste management companies is running its first Mercedes-Benz trucks for many years, a pair of 8x4 Actros supplied by Rygor.

A high-profile sponsor of London Irish RFC, Powerday placed its breakthrough order after being impressed both by the product and by the professionalism of the team at the Heathrow branch of Britain’s biggest Mercedes-Benz Dealer.

The 32-tonners are now operating from Powerday’s headquarters at Willesden Junction, in west London. Both are Actros 3236K models with 265 kW (360 hp) engines and Mercedes PowerShift automated transmissions.

One of the trucks has a steel Thompson tipping body and Palfinger Epsilon crane with grab. The other is fitted with Hyva hook-loading equipment and is capable of handling 40 cubic yard roll-on roll-off bins – it can also pull a drawbar trailer with a second ‘ro-ro’ bin at a gross train weight of up to 44 tonnes.

Founded in 1980, Powerday is a family-owned business and has been growing strongly, doubling in size over the past three years. It owns and operates the largest materials recycling facility in southern England, at which it processes municipal, business, construction and demolition, and event waste.

The company runs a mixed-marque fleet of 87 trucks. The line-up includes a couple of 7.5-tonners and six tractor units, but most are 18- and 32-tonne skip-loaders, tippers and hook-loaders.

Operations Manager Brian Hosford was appointed in February, having previously worked as a consultant to Powerday. He recalls: “We put this order out to tender and Rygor’s response was the most competitive, while its sales executive Rish Channa had clearly done his homework and understood exactly what we needed.

“The Dealer took me out to Germany to see the Mercedes-Benz factory and test drive the product. The manufacturer has clearly looked at this industry and developed a vehicle that meets all of our requirements.
